Welcome to the Beat the Sun Field Day. This session is the final opportunity of the season to step out of your comfort zone to test your map and compass or GPS knowledge. And, because we can’t help ourselves – this session is a Halloween-themed practice day.
This three hour challenge is designed to build your confidence, and skill, at finding control points at your own pace and with a route of your own making.
* 1:45p – Map and clue sheet distributed
* 2p – Prompt start
* 5p – Practice finish (be at the finish line on time)
* Following – Time to eat
This field day is a ROGAINE style challenge.
You will have three hours to find as many control points as possible using map and compass or your GPS skills. You choose how many control points, and the course you want to follow while also managing time. You must return to the start/finish line at 5p. For every minute you are late, points are deducted.
Halloween Theme: At the conclusion of the field day practice, there will be a Halloween-themed dinner with a taco bar, desserts and drinks. Bring extra layers to dress warmly, we will be outside with a campfire (you might leave smelling like smoke). Though there are several log stumps to sit on, if you want something more comfortable, bring it with you.
There might be a Halloween costume walk.
Best costume gets the best prize.
What to Bring: A compass, a writing utensil and your day pack with the 10 Essentials – there will be no water on the course.
Directions: Will be provided to registrants one week prior to the challenge date. Start/finish line is approximately 30 minutes from the Pagosa Springs Visitor Center in the Fawn Gulch/Johnny Creek area.
Challenge Limit: Limit of 25 individuals (minimum of 8) – rate includes map and clue sheet and Halloween-themed dinner.
