September Orienteering Field Day

Welcome to the Beat the Sun Summer Series. This is the final opportunity of the season to step out of your comfort zone to test your map and compass or GPS knowledge. This three hour challenge is designed to build your confidence, and skill, at finding control points at your own pace and with a route of your own making.
* 3:45p – Map and clue sheet distributed
* 4p – Prompt start
* 7p – Practice finish (be at the finish line on time)
* Following – Time to eat
This field day is a ROGAINE style challenge.
You will have three hours to find as many control points as possible using map and compass or your GPS skills. You choose how many control points, the course you want to follow while also managing time. You must return to the start/finish line at 7p. For every minute you are late points are deducted.
About the Series: Participate in one field day or all four field days. Awards will be given in September for most points in the series and most improved. After the conclusion of each practice there will be dinner of homemade soup and bread. For challenge days beginning at the basecamp there will also be a campfire and s’more cones.
What to Bring: A compass, a writing utensil and your day pack with the 10 Essentials – there will be no water on the course.
Directions: Will be provided to registrants one week prior to the challenge date. Start/finish line is approximately 30-minutes from the Pagosa Springs Visitor Center in the Fawn Gulch/Johnny Creek area.
Challenge Limit: Limit of 25 individuals (minimum of 8) – rate includes map and clue sheet; homemade soup and bread.
Field Day Reservations: Registration closes at 6p on Thursday, September 26th. Reservations are first request, first reserve. No refunds for cancellations.
